It is smarter and more sophisticated than the older Roomba model thanks to better mapping technology. It also has more advanced memory. It can also be operated remotely using the iRobot HOME app.

It also has a feature that lets you create digital 'Keep out Zones within the app, which block the robot from entering certain areas of your home. It's a great choice for people who have pets or children and want to keep the mess away. However, it didn't perform as well in our tests for pet hair when compared to the Samsung Powerbot R7070 and Neato Botvac Connected.

IRobot's latest robotic vacuum is a mighty machine, able to quickly and effortlessly remove dirt from carpeted areas and hard floors. It's one of the smarter robots we've tested due to its mapping capabilities and the ability to resume where it left off after an entire charge (which eliminates the annoyance caused by the traditional Roomba's random navigation).

This vacuum cleaner is one of the most flexible we've ever seen. It comes with multiple sensors as well as a camera. It can create an even route around your home, remember it, avoid obstacles and even detect the presence of ledges.

The iRobot App makes it simple to schedule cleanings, and adjust the robot's behavior. The top controls include the Home button as well as Spot Mode that allows you to clean a particular area. This model has a low-maintenance filter that captures up to 99% pollutants and allergens.

It performed well in our pet hair tests, picking up 0.2 ounces on midpile and low-pile carpets and hardwood. It was able to fit under our sofas, where space was smaller than any other model we've tried.

8. iRobot Roomba 980XP

It has replaced the nickel-metal-hydride battery that was used in earlier models with a lithium-ion one that should last longer between charges and during cleaning sessions.

The 980XL is a high-end model, and the extra features make it worth the price. It has more advanced mapping technology than the 900 series. It is cleaner on hard and carpet flooring, and it is able to start it remotely.

It also features an effective cleaning system, which includes a ten-fold improvement in suction power compared to older Roombas. A dual-swivel brush can be used to reach corners and under furniture. It will even automatically clean your floors after it has vacuumed.

It's not the most quiet, however, particularly when you're using the carpet boost feature. It was measured at around 80 dB which is the same as a prop-driven aircraft flying overhead. Luckily, it is possible to use a virtual barrier to keep it from areas that are sensitive, such as the dog's water bowl and food bowls.
